What Is Nitrous Oxide?
Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is a gas that is inhaled through a nose mask during the treatment. As your child breathes in the nitrous oxide, which is mixed with oxygen, they will experience a relaxed, euphoric sensation. Nitrous oxide can help them feel calm and at ease throughout their treatment. Nitrous oxide sedation is very safe; the effects will wear off within just a few minutes after we remove the nose mask, and your child will quickly feel normal.
Is Nitrous Oxide Right for Your Child's Dental Visit?
Nitrous oxide is a good option for any of our patients who suffer from dental anxiety or dental phobia. If your child feels anxious because they are receiving a treatment they have not experienced before, or if they simply dislike the sounds and sights of the dental office, we may recommend nitrous oxide to help them feel more relaxed. Frequently Asked Questions
Can My Child Eat or Drink Before Receiving Nitrous Oxide?
While nitrous oxide is very gentle, a full stomach can occasionally lead to mild nausea or upset stomach during sedation. It is generally recommended that your child eats a light meal (such as toast, apple sauce, or soup) about two hours before their appointment, avoiding heavy, fatty, or greasy foods immediately prior to dental care.
Does Nitrous Oxide Replace the Need for Numbing Shots?
Nitrous oxide acts as a mild analgesic (pain reliever) and sedative, but it is not a complete replacement for local anesthesia during procedures like fillings or extractions. However, because nitrous oxide significantly relaxes your child and dulls sensitivity, it makes receiving local numbing injections far easier and virtually stress-free.
How Long Does It Take for the Effects of Nitrous Oxide to Wear Off?
The effects wear off almost instantly once the gas is turned off. By administering 100% pure oxygen for 3 to 5 minutes at the conclusion of the dental procedure, the nitrous oxide is completely flushed out of your child's lungs and blood stream. By the time they stand up from the dental chair, they are fully alert and ready to resume normal activities.
